I started my OJT last April 9, 2008, and below were my first week experiences.
Day 1
I came to work early and excited but of course a little bit nervous. Luckily, our officemates were very accommodating which made us feel comfortable with the environment. While waiting for our boss, Sir David Beckwith, we were asked to watch a video on a Ruby on Rails. Then an orientation on our specific tasks was given.
I was assigned to work with Ms. Charlene Edolsa, my immediate supervisor. I was asked to do the front end parts of their boxvalet project. It is a data driven web application written in Ruby on Rails/MySQL which allows owners of mutliple chains of stores that rent out mailboxes to customers. The application reminds store owners and customers of over due and almost due payments by email. My major task will be getting this project’s application production ready and improve its user interface.
Since I am not familiar with the Ruby on Rails Programming language, Sir David gave me a 4 hour, non-stop, one-on-one tutorial on the language’s basics. We made a simple application and run it on a browser. Here I used the book ‘Agile Web Development with Rails’ as one of my reference.
My first day was fun! =)
Day 2
Today, I finished the installations of Aptana, the IDE that I will be using for this Ruby project; the SQLyog for my database; and the InstantRails as my server. It took me quite a long time to setup my system. But at the end of the day, i made it a point that I finished adopting the boxvalet code and database in my system and browsed the project features as well.

Our Flaming, Super Red Office
This will be my workstation for the next couple of months as intern for Lavafire.
