Getting to Know…

April 9, 2008

I started my training last April 9, 2008. And yes, that is really the START of the official training. No more time to stop for a moment and to at least absorb, that, hey, I am indeed here, and my summer is going to be different. It’s like a shockwave directly hit me. My first day on the internship is very much different from my first days at school.

First is getting to know Seer Technologies, Inc. When I arrived, I was immediately introduced to the people in Seer including my two OJTmates from UPLB. They are really nice and accommodating. Then, I spent my morning setting up the goodies for the laptop that I will be using for the rest of the internship like Oracle, SQLDeveloper, Eclipse, and others. It’s my first time to use Oracle, and I kept on asking Mae (OJTmate) about the installation process. And then…I forgot to do something! I forgot about scott! But, thanks to Mr. Google, I fixed it! <yey> I was already thinking of uninstalling and then re-installing Oracle again, but it’s a good thing that I didn’t because simply uninstalling it does not guarantee that your system is totally Oracle-free. Whew!

Then, we had our orientation over lunch which was care of our Team Leads.<sarap.haha>. They ordered bowls of pasta for us. I was the last to finish eating and they were all waiting for me. Sir Jason (Team Lead) said jokingly, “ Cecille, ok lang yan. Kahit di mo na ubusin. Mukhang hirap na hirap ka na eh.” Then I said, “Naku, hindi po. Mabagal lang po talaga akong kumain.” <lol>

For the first few weeks, we will be dealing with case studies which will help us familiarize the concepts and technologies that we will be using. Every week we have a deadline according to the requirements specified in the case study and a presentation of the solutions that we came up with. They will provide us outline of the topics that are involved but we have to research and study it on our own. We are also allowed to consult our Team Leads and Mentors if ever we have questions but they will not give us the exact solution. After the orientation, they gave us Case Study 1 which is due by Friday.

Next is getting to know Oracle and SQLDeveloper. Since I’m totally new to Oracle which we need for our case study, I explored it first. Oracle has its own interface (first image), but SQLDeveloper (second image), the IDE they suggested makes life easier. I know something about SQL because of CS 165 so that really helped me.

Before the day ends, I started with the case study and I was still thinking about it on my way home, until I arrived at home, and even during my sleep. <haha, just kidding about the sleep part. *winkwink*>
